US government’s 2026 H-1B Cap Initial Registration Period Opens on March 7

Big news alert: the US government’s 2026 H-1B Cap Initial Registration Period Opens on March 7.

What does this mean?  The H-1B cap visa is a US work visa for highly skilled foreign workers in specialty occupations.  It is subject to an annual limit (“cap”) set by Congress, currently 65,000 visas per fiscal year and another 20,000 visas for those with a US Master’s Degree or higher.

Since demand usually exceeds supply, the USCIS conducts a lottery to select applicants who may apply via their employer.  This year’s “beneficiary-centric” selection process continues from last year’s roll-out, giving added weight to unique beneficiaries rather than by registration.

The FY 2026 H-1B Cap Initial Registration Period officially opens at noon Eastern on March 7 and runs through noon Eastern March 24, 2025.
